Higher education institutions have a pivotal role to play in the development of a nation in general and in the uplift of rural agrarian communities in particular. The capacity of the institutions established/funded by the Govt is found to be incommensurate with the demand for higher education opportunities in Kerala. Self-financed colleges play a crucial role in ensuring inclusive education by providing opportunities for higher studies to those students who do not get admission in Govt/aided colleges. St. Xavier’s Arts and Science College, a leading self-financed higher education institution, was founded in the year 2011 by Mar Joseph Kalathiparambil, former Bishop of Calicut. The College is envisaged to provide opportunities for quality higher education for the young people of the Malabar region. It is situated in Calicut city which is virtually the capital of the Malabar region. Rt. Rev. Dr. Varghese Chackalakal, Bishop of Calicut, a great visionary and a vibrant leader in the field of education, is the Patron of the College. The College has recently been given a face-lift and is preparing for a take off by shifting to its new building under the efficient leadership of Msgr. Vincent Arackal, Manager of the College.
The College occupies a premier position in the academic sphere with five undergraduate and two postgraduate programmes. Utmost care is taken to improve the infrastructural facilities of the college. The college is indebted to the Management, staff, students, and parents for their collective effort in its smooth functioning as well as in ensuring a bright future for the students, irrespective of religion, caste or creed.
I would like to make use of this opportunity to express my deep sense of gratitude to Rev. Fr. Jose Vayalilkalapurayil, the first Principal of the College, who led the College to great heights during the early years of its commencement of instruction. The service of our former Principal, Rev. Dr. Charles Leon, is also acknowledged with gratitude. The dedication and commitment of preceding principal Dr. V.V Georgekutty, former controller of examination of Calicut university is highly praiseworthy. The vigour and vigil Rev. Fr. Johnson Kochuparambil has been exuding as the Bursar and Vice-Principal of the college are worth mentioning.
As the new Principal of the college, I would like to proceed along the avenues opened up by my predecessors. The commitment is to work with a view to scaling the zenith of glory through the concerted effort of all stakeholders. St. Francis Xavier, who started the first Christian higher education institution, namely St. Paul’s College at Goa, is the heavenly Patron of the College. The effort he had put in, the challenges faced, and the strain and pain taken up for the uplift of the poor people of India lead us to seek opportunities for service to humanity, and light and energise the staff and students to be vibrant, self- disciplined and committed. We, members of the faculty, are committed to be with our students in their academic needs so that each of them will achieve a performance level comparable to any other brilliant pupil in the respective area of study. I wish a bright future for all of them and pray to Almighty God to bless them with success and happiness in life.
Prof. Varghese Mathew
